Last week the Creativeworks London Festival showcased projects, prototypes and ideas generated by the London-based Knowledge Exchange hub. (See our previous blog on it, here).


The programme supported creative business, entrepreneurs, as well as arts and humanities researchers in the realisation of 143 new collaborative awards across 3 grant schemes and 4 years of work.


We came away with three big messages:


First, creativity requires a push to thrive. The experience of the REACT Hub showed that some elements are necessaries: a dedicated space and external partners to deliver the product. In addition, ‘creative producers’ within the university need to connect people and manage collaborations.


Second, we still need stronger evidence of the non-commercial benefits. Researchers need to identify and transmit to policymakers new ways to evaluate in a robust way the impact of hubs’ ecosystem and activities.


Finally, the future for Knowledge Exchange could be iterative. Rather than grand projects, smaller, leaner collaborations are significant, which in turn demand a different form of policy support.


BOP was involved in the evaluation phase of the project, with our Iain Bennet chairing the panel debate on ‘Collaborative research and the creative entrepreneur’s journey’.
