Paul and David travelled to Qingdao for Beijing Design Week and the city of Qingdao’s Transforming Cities through Design: Urban Regeneration Global Trends Forum. Presenting on the mapping of cultural futures and the regeneration of global cities, they shared insights on a new cultural landscape, how to leverage cultural assets, and trends in developer-led cultural regeneration projects.
Speaking on the importance of urban renewal, David discussed how “regeneration is by definition a cyclical feature of urban development. Cities that can integrate culture into the regeneration cycle will truly become successful global cities that support the flourishing of the human spirit.”
Presenting case studies of Hamburg, Liverpool, Montreal and London, his presentation demonstrated how to use culture as a primary tool in city planning to help animate cities as they regenerate and organically grow.
Paul also emphasised how cultural, creative and heritage assets are an essential part of high quality, high value regeneration and development projects. Through case studies of San Paulo, Skellefteå, Perth and Antwerp, Paul discussed how these assets energise local economies, connect people, and improve the quality of the build environment. And, how when leveraged properly, they make a measurable difference to visitors, stakeholders and overall competitiveness.
We welcomed the chance to be back in China and thank our gracious hosts for a great event. It was a pleasure to present alongside a roster of experts at the forefront of their fields.
