Our evaluation extended beyond the programme's conclusion in mid-2021, assessing the early legacy impacts. Speaking to eight projects for this legacy research, we found that the programme had lasting impact across all those interviewed.
It has led to ongoing cultural sector and community engagement activities, and in several cases, expanded or inspired further local activities. Great Place’s role in raising visibility and understanding of the value of culture among local stakeholders was also key to creating strong, enduring local partnerships and networks. Policy learning gained through the programme has largely been retained.
Additionally, practices developed through the Great Place Scheme have been deployed in new arenas and introduced to new geographical areas or beneficiaries.
It was rewarding to be on a journey with these projects long-term, including throughout the Covid crisis. It was particularly invaluable to have the opportunity to observe what transpires post-funding for a programme aimed at long-term change.
Launched in 2016, Great Place was a strategic programme that aimed to achieve systemic change, investing in 16 projects that enhanced culture’s role in local decision-making and policy. Our evaluation extended beyond the programme's conclusion in mid-2021, assessing the early legacy impacts.
